 Urban initiative by Bithari Disha

Bithari Disha, a social organization working since 2001 on various social development with special focus on health, sanitation, disaster management, eco-friendly livelihood, education in different districts of West Bengal. Though initially the main activities were started in the rural area, considering the situation of urban areas and demand of the local community and administration Bithrai Disha took initiative to solve some basic needs of these urban community.

Some examples of Initiative at urban area are as follows:

A.   Livelihood and Health Security of the Waste picker at Rajarhat: In the year 2020, after AMPHAN cyclone we came to know from the Additional District Magistrate and District Coordinator of Water and Sanitation Cell, North 24 Parganas that waste picker have a role for the waste management of Rajarhat. We have started work with 40 waste pickers to ensure their livelihood and health security. We are organizing medical camp regularly for health check-up, supplying protection kit, workshop on social welfare schemes like Swasthya Sathi, Social security etc.

B.   Sanitation at Madhyamgram:  Local Councilor and District Coordinator, Wash and Sanitation cell of North 24 Parganas asked for support on awareness against open defecation and motivation to make toilet. In the year 2019, we have organised awareness programme and supported partly to construct 124 toilet for the residence of slum area at Madhyamgram Rail colony with the assistance of Rotary Club of Calcutta Mahanagar, Kolkata.

C.     Support to the Community members of slum area at Barasat: The local councilor of Barasat asked Bithari Disha to support the affected people of slum area who have lost their livelihood due to lockdown and lost their shelter after AMPHAN cyclone. Considering the situation we have distributed ration kit and Tarpaulin to the community members. We have also involved them in the cleanup drive against cloth for work programme, which was supported by Goonj. Cloth for work programme is a regular activities in this area.

D.  Medical Equipment to Barasat Medical College & Hospital: During the time of COVID-19 we have supported medical equipment and related accessories along with safety kit to Barasat Medical College and Hospital. We have handover these equipment in the hand of Super of the Hospital in presence of the local MP Ms. Kakali Ghosh Dastidar and State Food Minister Mr. Rathin Ghosh.
